The barriers to critical thinking are many but the ones that I think come quickest to mind based on my personal experiences are personal biases and failure to critically listen. Making rash judgments is often the result of a failure to critically think. I will use my personal experiences to illustrate. When I was released from prison in January 2019 I returned to work for Star Market as a manager. When they rehired me I was used a trouble shooter and sent to various stores to solve problem. While this was challenging it was tiring. I asked to be assigned to a permanent store. Be careful what you wish for. I was assigned to a store near my sister's house where i was living at the time. It was a beautiful store and very busy I loved.it. My manager Mr. X was a screamer and yeller. Based on my personal experiences that s a oor communication method with me. I get very anxious. I tried to explain it calmly and cooly a number of times but no luck. Two hours later same behaviour. If I had applied critical thinking. I could have spoken with district managers, one of the other store managers or any of numerous critical approaches. Instead I put my resume on Indeed and was hired by CWS that Friday. Great result but just an example that good results don't mean a good process. I could have had a much more negative results and even thought about quitting which put me in trouble with my PO never mind the financial consequences.

Hi Gregg. Thanks for this post. I think it's really interesting from your example that ultimately you reached a good outcome, but reflected back that the process you applied to get there could've been better. I think that shows really good insight. You mention other 'critical approaches' that you could've used looking back, I'd be keen to know what they might have been to manage the situation more effectively? What other sources of information or different viewpoints could've been obtained?
