Module 2: Influential Communication
Communication is the process of sharing information, thoughts and feelings between people through speaking, writing or body language. Influential communication extends the concept to require that transmitted content is received and understood by someone in the way it was intended. The goals of influential communication include creating a common perception, changing behaviors and acquiring information.
It is simply impossible to become a great leader without being a great communicator. Think about it … how do the best leaders motivate and inspire their people? Through clear and compelling communication.
How do the best organizations promote discipline, accountability and strategic alignment? With clear communication. And, how do market leaders sell their products and services? With compelling ads and marketing campaigns — in sum, by clear communication.
The best communicators are great listeners and astute in their observations. Great communicators are skilled at reading a person/group by sensing the moods, dynamics, attitudes, values and concerns of those being communicated with. Not only do they read their environment well, but they possess the uncanny ability to adapt their messaging to said environment without missing a beat. The message is not about the messenger; it has nothing to do with messenger; it is however 100% about meeting the needs and the expectations of those with whom you are communicating.
Bottom line – The leadership lesson here is whenever you have a message to communicate (either directly, or indirectly through a third party) make sure the message is true & correct, well-reasoned, and substantiated by solid business logic that is specific, consistent, clear and accurate.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of Influential Communication, you will be able to:
• Identify the characteristics of an influential communicator.
• Determine why influential communication is a business imperative.
• Craft a message and determine the best mode for delivery.
• Become a powerful presenter and writer.
• Identify the pitfalls that can negatively impact communication.
• Utilize influential communication strategies to deliver a message to diverse audiences.
