Module 9: Encouraging the Heart
Accomplishing extraordinary things in organizations is hard work. To keep hope and determination alive, leaders recognize contributions that individuals make. In every winning team, the members need to share in the rewards of their efforts, so leaders celebrate accomplishments. They make people feel like heroes. Kouzes & Posner, authors of Encouraging the Heart, did a study in 1995 that showed that “performance was higher when people were led by individuals who gave more encouragement.” They go on to talk about the attributes of a motivating environment: • I know what is expected of me. • In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work. • My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person. • There is someone at work who encourages my development. • In the last six months, someone at work has talked to me about my progress. • At work, my opinions seem to count. • The mission/purpose of my company makes me feel my job is important. Every employee appreciates recognition: It’s one of the only free currencies we have to give.
Learning Objectives: At the end of Encouraging the Heart, you will be able to: • Understand and become proficient at encouraging the heart through the seven essentials: setting clear standards, expecting the best, paying attention, personalizing recognition, celebrating together, and setting the example
