Which presentation do you think works better? Why?
For me, I think the presentation explained in Example 2 works better. By providing greater details as to the steps Christine and Frank took in the development of the marketing campaign, as well as sharing personal details about them, Mr. Salazar more effectively communicates his appreciation for their hard work, which puts into context the need to acknowledge and celebrate their contribution, not just to Christine and Frank, but to the larger organization. The second example clearly exemplifies Encouraging the Heart.
Example 1:
Who are the people involved in this venture and what do you know about them?
Beyond customers, the only individuals involved in the venture are the marketing team, as they are the only department that Alfredo Salazar specifically acknowledges in his announcement. Possibly, it would seem there was an opportunity to also thank the IT department for the technical assistance in launching the website. As well as the sales department, as I would have to believe that company’s salespeople impacted the use of the new website and the increase in orders.
What problem were they trying to solve?
The problem they are trying to solve is unclear, although I would assume it is to develop an online sales presence, as it does not seem that they had an online catalog established prior to this venture.
What actions did these people take to meet the challenge?
Generally, a website was developed, as well as a sales and marketing strategy to promote the new online catalog/website and advertise the free promotional pillow. The specifics, or who did what, is unknown though in this example.
How did they accomplish the task?
This is unclear. The marketing team was “dedicated,” although unsure how so. The specific steps of the project are left unsaid. The employees' internal motivations
What were the results of their actions?
Implementation of the new website and online catalog resulted in an increase in product orders/sales, thus promoting increased use of the online catalog.
What is Alfredo Salazar’s relation to his employees?
Mr. Salazar seemingly appreciates his employees, as he did publicly acknowledge their contribution to the project’s success, in addition to providing them a check/bonus for their work. As the example is written, his acknowledgment seemed a bit cold and superficial.
Example 2:
Who are the people involved in this venture and what do you know about them?
Christine and Frank were directly involved in the project. We know that they are hard-working, creative, and went above and beyond, sacrificing some of their own personal time, which they clearly value, to ensure that they developed a new idea and delivered it to their boss as promised.
What problem were they trying to solve?
The problem is still not explicitly stated although it is implied that they wanted to come up with a marketing campaign to promote the launch of the new online website/catalog.
What actions did these people take to meet the challenge?
Christine and Frank worked extended hours, conducting a bit of a “sprint” session until they sussed out an effective idea for the marketing campaign. In addition to developing the “Shop Until You Drop” campaign, they envisioned how they could visually present their idea, which likely supported how they communicated it to Mr. Salazar and aided in its implementation.
How did they accomplish the task?
Christine and Frank accomplished this specific task by spending most of the night, until they were “exhausted,” creating their idea. Also, utilizing this second scenario, it is likely that their prior experiences with their supervisor, Mr. Salazar, drove them to accomplish the task. His leadership and ability encourage their heart in prior instances provided them the extra push and motivation to bear down and focus on creating something for the company. For whatever reason, in figuring out my response here, that saying, "People don't leave bad jobs, they leave bad bosses," popped into my head. This example shows that Mr. Salazar is the opposite of a "bad boss," and it's Christine's and Frank's prior experiences with him that propelled them forward to get this projected completed and completed well. Speaking of my own experience, I think I have gone above and beyond on certain projections at times because of the relationship I have had with a supervisor. Based on the way they had previously expressed my value to both them and the organization, I wanted to make sure that I did the best job possible.
What were the results of their actions?
It sounds like the company was in the process of rolling out the online catalog but were awaiting an effective marketing campaign. Christine’s and Frank’s idea was the catalyst to not only launching the website sooner than anticipated but increasing customer awareness regarding its implementation.
What is Alfredo Salazar’s relation to his employees?
Mr. Salazar clearly is connected to his employees. He knows about their personal lives, which adds context to their accomplishment, as well as to his celebration of their achievement when relating it to the rest of the company. It is also apparent that he takes notice of their work, as he remarks on noticing Christine and Frank in the office later in the evening and being there first thing in the morning. This conveys that he is cognizant of his staff members’ contributions. His use of the socks during the company announcement signifies his sense of humor, which one could assume makes him more relatable to his team.
