Worksheet #2
Telling the Story
Alfredo Salazar, the president of Fluffy Bedding, calls a special meeting to let his employees know about the success of the company’s new website and to express his appreciation. These are two different ways he might want to make his presentation. Answer the questions as well
as you can after both examples. Which presentation do you think works better? Why?
Example 1:
Thanks to the dedication of our marketing staff, Fluffy Bedding was able to launch its new website in record time. Customer response to the site has been excellent and orders have increased by 10% since its introduction two weeks ago. Our free pillow promotion has had great success at encouraging our customers to order from the online catalog. Here’s a check to show our appreciation. Thank you for your hard work!
Who are the people involved in this venture and what do you know about them?
The people involved in the venture are Alfredo Salazar, the employees of the company and a separate group of employees who make up the marketing staff and I would add the customers who responded to the newly launched website and purchased the company’s products.
What problem were they trying to solve?
The company was attempting to increase its customer base, increase sales and develop and launch a new website that was designed to generate customer interest and increase sales.
What actions did these people take to meet the challenge?
The marketing staff quickly developed and launched a new website that was used to advertise the company’s product and attract customers to the company’s online store.
How did they accomplish the task?
The marketing team launched a new website and devised a promotions campaign that included a free pillow with a purchase.
What were the results of their actions?
Customer response was excellent, customer visits to the online store increased and product sales increased by 10%.
What is Alfredo Salazar’s relation to his employees?
He is a happy boss. He values the efforts of the marketing team and believes a monetary gift conveys that message. There is no real indication of his relationship to his employees.
Example 2:
I was working late one night and when I left about nine, I noticed a light on in the marketing office. Now, normally, Christine is out of there by six because she has to make dinner for her kids, and Frank has his Tuesday night basketball game, which he’s never missed for as long as
I’ve known him. But when I peeked in, they were both in there, eating cold fast food, looking a bit work and cranking out one idea after another. They told me no matter late they had to stay they were going to come up with something within the next day that would knock my socks off.
Sure enough, the next day when I got into work at 7:30, they were already here with big smiles on their faces. They had worked the night before until they were exhausted, and Frank had actually, fallen asleep. Well, that was the spark for the idea that’s turned out to be the best
marketing campaign we’ve ever had. “Shop until you drop” and get a free pillow for late night shopping. They had even taken photos to show us how the ads would look, with Christine in bed, shopping the web on her laptop, soft pillows all around her. Because of their hard work
and creativity, we were able to get the website up and running one week early and customer awareness is sky high. So, in honor of Frank and Christine, here are the socks they knocked off me, fully laundered, and here are some unlaundered checks as tokens of our appreciation.
Who are the people involved in this venture and what do you know about them?
The people involved in the venture are Alfredo Salazar, the employees of the company and Christine and Frank who make up the marketing team and I would add the customers who responded to the newly launched website and increased their purchases by 10%. Christine is a parent who leaves promptly at 6:00PM to get home to prepare dinner for her family. Frank is part of the marketing team also; he has a standing basketball game every Tuesday night that he never misses. Christine and Frank are excited about the new product and the launch of the website. They are a dedicated team who work hard together for the company.
What problem were they trying to solve?
They were trying to solve the company’s need to have an online presence that would help draw customers to their website and increase sales.
What actions did these people take to meet the challenge?
Each member of the team was willing to make personal sacrifices. They were willing to work through the night and did so until they came up with a marketing pitch that was exciting and engaging. The team created an advertising campaign, maintained their enthusiasm after working late and arrived at work early the next day to pitch their campaign. Christine and Frank created a complete marketing package including a slogan and copy ready photos that could be used in the advertisement campaign.
How did they accomplish the task?
They worked collaboratively in good spirits (not begrudgingly) and presented an on-time quality presentation that represented the company and their commitment to the company’s goal of providing a quality online shopping experience for their customers.
What were the results of their actions?
The advertising campaign was well received by the company President and the public. The website launched early, attracted customers and helped to increase sales by 10% within two weeks of its launch.
What is Alfredo Salazar’s relation to his employees?
Mr. Salazar was very familiar with the Marketing team. He knew details about their private lives and valued the sacrifices each member of the marketing team was willing to make. He intentionally celebrated the hard work and dedication publicly and was unafraid to spotlight and praise the work of the marketing team. Mr. Salazar set a tone of high business standards and generously displayed high praise and gratitude for the team that displayed a committed work ethic. The monetary gift was only part of his public display of appreciation.
Example #2 works better. It’s personal, endearing, honest and shows Mr. Salazar knows his team, appreciates their work ethic, recognizes dedication publicly and provides a meaningful monetary incentive. The entire presentation in Example #2 serves as an encouragement for others and for Christine and Frank in the future.

Worksheet #1
Encouragement or Discouragement
Encouraging the Heart can be used to inspire all types of people, even those with performance problems. Here are some situations that could result in negative consequences, along with the negative feedback that might first occur to us. Looks at what’s good in these people’s performance and phrase any criticism positively. Avoid giving both positive and negative feedback in the same conversation. Show your trust and encourage these people to do better the next time.
Using the following scenarios, provide a positive response to the situation:
Example:
Your 5 year old child has been trying to do more things by himself but spills milk when pouring it into a glass.
Negative response: “That’s too hard for you. Why don’t you let me know if for you the next time?”
Positive response: “You’re getting really good at doing things without my help. Let me see you pour some milk on your own again and I’ll give you some tips so you can do it by yourself from now on.”
Scenario #1: Your assistant sent an important memo to your boss that had a number of embarrassing errors. She’s usually very efficient, but sometimes she does too much at one time and she’s made mistakes like this before.
Negative response: “From now on I want to proof everything you send.”
Positive response:
Your support getting the memo out was helpful. It freed me up to complete a few tasks that I needed to finish. Our memos are an important part of our communications strategy and effective written communication is key in our business. Each correspondence represents our department’s commitment to excellence. It’s crucial these communications are clear, concise and 100% error free. Please review your last correspondence and identify the areas that require improvement. Do you have any suggestions for how we can both manage our time more efficiently to always hit our 100% error free communications goal?
Scenario #2: You catch some of your team members talking about last night’s football game when they should be working on a very important project that’s due the next day. Everyone’s been working hard on it for a week.
Negative response: “I’ve been working my tail off to get this out and you’re not ready with your end of it yet. Save the TV talk until your break!”
Positive response:
I really enjoyed last night’s game too. We are in the end zone for our project that is due tomorrow. Can we use that same winning team spirit our Giants had on the field last night to get this project completed. Imagine two wins in one week. That will really give us all something to celebrate. Let’s get this done together. TEAMWORK!!!
Scenario #3: An employee, who’s otherwise reliable has missed a deadline for the second time in a month. This happened before when her mother was sick but this time she didn’t give a hint of any problem until it was too late.
Negative response: “When you miss a deadline, you set back the whole team. If this happens again you are off this project.”
Positive response:
Keisha, things around here have been pretty busy and we are all under pressure to meet our deadlines. I know you have been pre-occupied with your mom’s illness, and I know it must be taking a toll on you. Your work has always been superior, and your contributions are important to the team’s success. We can make adjustments and reassign tasks if we have advanced notice. Please reach out to me if you need support regarding your role as a caregiver for your mom. You remember, last year when I had to request support through EAP when my grandmother became ill. Long term illness of a loved one is very difficult to handle alone. Let the team support you now. Please let us know how we can support you and we will step up. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. Keeping your mom in my thoughts.
