Telling the Story
Example 1-
Who are the people involved in this venture and what do you know about them?
• Marketing staff- they are dedicated
What problem were they trying to solve?
• New website launch, increase sales and promote the online catalog
What actions did these people take to meet the challenge?
• They launched the website in record time, free pillow promotion, user friendly site?
How did they accomplish the task?
• I don’t know, hard work?
What were the results of their actions?
• 10% increase in orders in two weeks
What is Alfredo Salazar’s relation to his employees?
• Not sure
Example 2-
Who are the people involved in this venture and what do you know about them?
• Christine- mom who is dedicated to her kids
• Frank- a basketball player who never misses a game
What problem were they trying to solve?
• Innovation and ideas for the website
What actions did these people take to meet the challenge?
• They used their lived experience (Frank falling asleep) and photos to come up with a marketing campaign.
How did they accomplish the task?
• They worked late, expressed their dedication, used creativity and were proud of the work.
What were the results of their actions?
• The website was up and running one week early
• Customer awareness rose0% increase in orders in two weeks
What is Alfredo Salazar’s relation to his employees?
• He notices his employee’s both professionally and personally
• He honors their dedication and can feel the level of respect and appreciation in his language
• His humor also comes through in honoring their work, which is inviting, I felt like I was part of his team reading this.
Example 2 works better in my leadership approach. Anyone can say, good job and here is an award, but not everyone takes the time to really get to know their staff. I find when I do this it elevates the acknowledgment from standard professionalism to personalized professionalism!
Encouragement or Discouragement
Scenario #1
Positive response: “Janet, your memos are clear and concise along with having a dedication to multitasking. I did notice that this last memo had some mistakes and would like to take some together to look it over and identify areas where I can support you in developing efficient ways in juggling multiple things at once.
Scenario #2:
Positive response: Hey team, that game was insane, and you have all been working so hard on this project to meet the deadline. Let’s circle back to the project and when we are finished, we can spend more time chatting about how bad Brady was last night!
Scenario #3:
Positive response: Angela, you have been through a lot this last year and have continued to manage your workload well through it all. It is obvious you try and take it all on without asking for help however, there have been two missed deadlines that had negative consequence for the project. The team and I are here to support you but can’t unless you communicate what is happening on your end that caused the missed deadline. (Give open space to for Angela to discuss what is going on, not assuming it is her mom).
