• What was your Plan?
I have 4 staff at my location. 3 of the staff offices are located near my office space and frequently stop in my office to check in and ask questions in the morning and throughout the day. The Administrative Assistant is located at the front desk—somewhat removed from my office. We often do not see each other until later in the morning when I go out to the front desk to grab something from the copier or step outside. She also has tasks that need to be completed very early in the day and doesn’t have much time to just check in with me or the other staff.
I feel that she is least connected to the larger group—but as Administrative Assistant—she is really the hub of all activity and needs to be very much a part of our team. I wanted to find a way to offer her positive feedback and have her feel that her efforts are valuable to our team.
• What did you Do?
I made it a priority to greet her in person each morning this week and let her know that I value her and appreciate her getting her tasks done in the morning. I shared that I recognize that this does keep her from the informal morning check ins with everyone and encouraged her to make time to check in with others as well.
• What did you Study and learn from your test?
She shared that she really appreciated my recognizing that she does have the morning “duties” that prevent her from the informal morning connections and thanked me for taking the time to say hello and check in each morning. This is just another reminder of how important it is to just say thank you for specific accomplishments and tasks. They may be big or small--but should be specific and meaningful to each person.
• What is your next Act?
I am usually at my desk – deep into my days work by 7:30 each morning and often don’t do a “walk around” until later in the morning. Starting Thursday, I am going to make sure I am in the front reception area at 7:45 – to greet each staff person as they come in for the day. I hope this will be a way to show my appreciation for them being here and have a quick check in with everyone. This may also prevent them from “gathering outside my office” each morning and get them focused on their daily tasks quicker as well.
