Discussion Post #1: Share a story about a time when you received thanks or recognition for something you had done and how it made you feel? Then share a time you didn’t receive acknowledgement for something you thought was important (a special achievement, extra hard work, etc.) How did it make you feel then? Why is it important to give recognition and positive feedback? Then provide a thoughtful response to the posts of two other people.
A: Positive - A moment that stands out for me is when I finally got my raise after two years. I started with the company as an intern and worked my up over the last 3 years. I had gone through my first and second year as a full time employee without even getting a review let alone a raise. I have committed a lot of time and energy into the IT department and in turn in the company and not receiving either really started to make me question if the work was even being appreciated. I was given a lot of promises over the 2 years which didn't turn into much and that helped to feed my discouragement. I was finally pulled into my bosses office and he proceeded to not only tell me about the raise I was finally receiving but he took the time out to explain how much he appreciated the work that I had done over the last few years. I really wasn't expecting this out of him if we are being honest. He was showing sincere appreciation and went on to say that the CEO not only knew me by name but appreciated the work that I had done as well. This was a really pivotal moment for me as I was considering starting to look else where for work. Being acknowledged for your hard work and time investment is something that reinforces loyalty and commitment to an idea or a goal. I really needed to hear that acknowledgement and it truly felt good to be appreciated.
Negative - When I first started as an intern in the IT department, we had just moved to the newly renovated side of the floor here at 633 3rd Ave. It was IT's job to move an enormous amount of hardware over from the old side to the new side. This required many late nights and weekend work to complete in the amount of time that we were given. When the move was over and employees started to use the office again, they had an event to thank everyone who helped. They went on to thank every single department and left out IT in the thank you speech. I remember not only how disappointed I was in that but I saw how it effected the team at the time as we were all standing there. The mood of everyone on the team dropped immediately and you could visibly see the loss of morale in everyone's face. Even after a few years have gone by, I still vividly remember that moment and how we all felt. Proper acknowledgement can go a long way and it doesn't have to be a grand gesture. I learned a valuable lesson that day.
Discussion Post #2: Post your score and share your thoughts about your score. Do you think it is accurate? Why or why not?
A: I scored a 167. I think this is fairly accurate as I am still at an early point in my career as a leader. I have a lot to learn and I think my score would of been much lower if I didn't take part in this leadership academy. I always knew that it was important to lift up those around you but I learned that there are strategies to applying this effectively. I think my score will increase over time as I learn and grow as a leader. I see a lot of these habits developing and growing in me in my personal life and my work life.
