What is an area that you would like to influence in your day to day work environment?
An area in my day to day environment where I would like to make change is how we can do more to protect the children in the families we serve. We work with such a vulnerable population-many do not have family or other community supports and are in need of help. These families become fractured and children are placed in foster care. I hope to find ways to better support, train, and engage staff to ensure we are doing all we can to support families and our community in general.
How might you influence it?
I will look how staff are currently supported and trained in issues regarding child abuse and neglect and how we can get them – and the community in general – trained in seeing signs and feeling more empowered to help. Do they need additional training or informational sessions with other community services? I will need to relay the importance of this to others within my office and ensure that they “buy in” to the value of this as well. I want to make sure all staff know that we play an active role in supporting families in our community.
What would you do and how would you integrate your learning from the LA in clear and obvious ways?
I will certainly need to use skills learned in each module from LA. Critical thinking skills will come into play as I will need to ask many questions such as what has been done in the past? What are the current issues? Who are the players? What is and isn’t working? My willingness to stretch and take on a new project will be tested and certainly I will need to call upon influential communication skills in selling and communicating my idea to others. I will need to consider any metrics that we already gather – including current referral numbers and potentially the number of calls we have made to child protective services. This project will certainly require use of all the skills I have learned over the past months!
