Staff morale is held together by many different factors that start from the top and work their way down. Starting from the why is a great position to start from when it comes to building morale. Effective Communication is key in keeping those around you motivated. Once you communicate why they are doing the job, they can start to work their way through the how and the what. The why encompasses the vision and that vision will be the fuel that will keep those around you motivated. This also starts the foundation for empowering those around you. Making sure that those working under you feel like they are in an environment that encourages progress is important. You can use that environment to constantly push a can-do attitude and keep your team working towards the best iteration of themselves.
Once the foundation for effective communication has been laid down, you can start to lead by example. I think that employees seeing their leaders motivated will help keep them motivated as well. I cannot expect those under me to be passionate about what they do if they don’t see my passion fueling my goal. I would strive to start in the why with them so we can reach the what together. This all works towards the vision that is realized and shared through the leader. Morale isn’t lifted by just one trait or one action but achieved through many small actions and good leadership traits. This is something that would have to be worked on daily and I think as a leader it is important to have perspective. This will help to support your team when they are frustrated or confused. The term ‘on mission’ was used in our recent class content and it fits perfectly here. Keeping that perspective helps to make sure that everyone is on mission and working towards the same goal.
Morale is something that needs to be maintained and a leader with the right tool kit can help morale grow and flourish. Keeping perspective, effectively communication, spreading the vision, and empowering others are what I think creates an environment that cultivates morale.
