1. In considering the overall culture in your area, what are the elements that you believe underscore a positive, can-do culture?
In our Oracle team, I think we have a good vision. We have been doing work on our team’s strategy, including coming up with a mission statement together.
I think we can get better at clearly identifying our values, but we have unwritten practices. We genuinely care about each other and have one another’s backs. We’re there for one another when we need help. We have a really good level of trust. We never say bad things about anyone else in the team. We share stories about work and our personal lives.
Place would be something we can get better at. Because we’re all remote, we miss that person-to-person connection. It’d be nice to come together once or twice a year. I actually don’t know how tall any of my team-mates are lol.
2. What strengths do you bring as a leader that will specifically fortify a can-do culture in your area? Please give an example.
I like to bring connection and kindness to the team. For example, someone in our team has had a really tough few year and she was moving to a new house. I suggested we send her a card and buy her a house-warming gift, which I happily organized. It was nice to see her so happy. Small gestures can go a long way.
3. How do you go about influencing others (in any area of your life)? What tactics do you use to influence behavior or actions of others?
I like to start by killing people with kindness and ask a lot of questions to get a better sense of the person. People like feeling heard and you can often influence be creating a positive emotion in someone. Building the rapport early is important.
I also try to know what their drivers are. Is it money, reaching a goal, having control, looking good, altruism? If it’s money, I focus on the savings. If it’s looking good for their boss, I’ll focus on what can make them look, and so on. I also consider what level of detail and information that person needs and will come well equipped. And do they like small talk or getting straight to the point? Lastly, I might through in some Neuro-linguistic programming lol.
