Post: Reflect on what you have learned to date. How did General Marshall, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King, Jr. draw upon their strengths to overcome adversity?
Marshall, Roosevelt and King all had to draw upon their individual strengths to overcome adversity.
I find the common thread in their stories is resiliency. We will all face some sort of hardship-something will go wrong in everyone’s life. But, how we use our inner strength to adapt to difficult situations is going to help us bounce back from challenges that we face.
Marshall, Roosevelt and King all had to draw upon their individual strengths to overcome adversity.
- George Marshall reportedly had a bad temper and was not known to be academically intelligent. However, he was able to read people and events and learned to control his temper. He was able to adapt to different situations and use his strengths to become an effective teacher and leader. He was confident in his beliefs and was willing to speak his mind.
- Eleonor Roosevelt was born into wealth and grew up around great political and social standing. However, there was a great deal of dysfunction in her family during her early life. Alcoholism, adultery, and her mother died when Eleonor was only eight; and her father when she was ten years old. She needed to grow up quickly and take on responsibilities and take charge of her own life. Her personal story seemed to resonate with the public and people followed her as she was an example of how personal tragedy could either destroy you or make you stronger and more bold.
- Martin Luther King, Jr. also was outspoken and confident in his own philosophy and beliefs. He earned trust and respect as he had endured a great deal of pain and suffering and instead of being beaten down by these events—he was strengthened by them.
