My evaluation revealed opportunities for growth related to my abilities to delegate, hold individuals accountable and manage my emotions. While reviewing the feedback with my mentor, we identified that some of the areas are tied to my ability to effectively communicate with others, so I am considering adding an aspect of influential communication to my stretch assignment.
As Dr. Brown notes in her TED talk, numbing vulnerability and thinking oneself invulnerable per se, limits our ability to connect with others. Embracing vulnerability promotes empathy and connection and is the birthplace of creation. We recently completed our module on innovation and from what I gathered, to innovate, one must be open to risk and potential failure when creating a new idea. Risk and potential failure require a level of comfort with vulnerability. Allowing myself to experience vulnerability can promote connection with and among my staff, as well as support innovation on the team. As an example, I do believe that I have held myself back in terms of delegation at times because I fear the outcome/results/content I will receive back when delegating specific projects. With that said, I am beginning to realize that a lack of doing so prevents me from establishing trust with team members, as I am not believing they have the capacity to get the project done. I am not allowing them to “stretch” at all. I think in the future, I will just have to take the risk, be vulnerable, and delegate a project or report in order to being to address my fear.
As I noted above, I am still considering my stretch assignment with my mentor. I am exploring an assignment that can address and improve some aspects of my communication, which would positively impact my leadership. I feel like I am still soul searching though, and trying to identify that thing that makes me feel really uncomfortable.
