A. Ask Refer to the assessment that you invited your colleagues to fill out. What were some areas where there were opportunities for your growth? How might the feedback you were given inform your stretch assignment work? Please make a note of a few areas where you would like to improve based on your own assessment of your skills and those of your colleagues. Work with your mentor, and share your thoughts on the discussion board.
A: The feed back that was constructive for me was being aware of how I come off as a person when I first interact with fellow coworkers and those around me in general. I pride myself in my confidence and the feedback brought to light that too much confidence can seem like I am just being egotistical. It was really surprising for me because I didn't feel like that was the case at all but looking back I can see how that was the perception of me. I truly don't want to come off as someone who is ego centered and it was eye opening. I am constantly trying to better myself and I appreciate the opportunity to grow that this feedback provided. The areas that I would like to work on would be staying conscious of how I come off when I first interact with someone in a social setting. Especially at work, I want to make sure that I develop good relationships with those I work with and I also want to be approachable as a leader as well. I have a lot of knowledge to share when it comes to my field and I want to those around me to feel like that knowledge is a resource that they can access when needed. A lot of this boils down to effective communication and understanding my pros and cons when it comes to my personality type.
B. How might being vulnerable improve YOUR leadership? In what areas do you hold yourself back because of a fear? What will you do to overcome that fear?
A: Being vulnerable helps to remind those around you that you are still only human. This makes you more relatable and shows that you are willing to grow as an individual when the time calls for it. You can't expect those around you show their vulnerability if you aren't willing to. I feel like this can help to create an environment where growth is encouraged and taking on change head on isn't something to be feared. I think I need to hold myself back a little more when I first meet someone as to not intimidate them or make them think that I am being egotistical. Being put in situations that would help me flex this muscle would be beneficial.
D. Check in with your mentor as you consider your stretch assignment. Post your stretch assignment on the board and describe how it will enhance your leadership.
A: The stretch assignment that I am focusing on will be leading a team of new and current coworkers in a project to setup a new location. While I have a lot of experience working to build out new locations, I don't have much experience in leading the project itself. I think this will help me flex the muscles needed to work on being approachable and not letting my personality cloud someone's perception of me as we work together. It will require me to share the knowledge that I have, which will hopefully be good practice, and communicate this knowledge in a way that is inviting to someone instead of pushing them away.
