A. Refer to the assessment that you invited your colleagues to fill out. What were some areas where there were opportunities for your growth? How might the feedback you were given inform your stretch assignment work? Please make a note of a few areas where you would like to improve based on your own assessment of your skills and those of your colleagues. Work with your mentor, and share your thoughts on the discussion board.
I had a couple of areas that stood out, being:
- I can be accommodating, almost too much so. Often others won’t see the frustration this can cause because I try to do a good job of emotional self-regulation and not throw a tantrum when I don’t get my needs met. But this can also send a message that it’s ok that someone didn’t do what I needed them to. However, I can reach a point where I put my foot down very hard and it shocks people (very rarely happens!). It’s not that I shun away from difficult conversations, it’s that I believe you can get more bees with honey than with vinegar.
- Planning and providing structure and clear deadlines is something I can get better at. I spend my headspace in the distant future, getting excited about the next exciting thing, and sometimes forget that others may need more clarity and structure to help get to where we need to. Being a manager and a mum has forced me to get better at this.
B. How might being vulnerable improve YOUR leadership? In what areas do you hold yourself back because of a fear? What will you do to overcome that fear?
I’m scared that sometimes I take on more than I can chew. I like a good challenge and I don’t mind failure as I genuinely see it as learning opportunities. But I’ve been known to throw myself into my career and then feel that I don’t have the time and energy to by the kind of mother I want to be. I love working and being challenged, but not at the expense of being a mum. So my biggest fear is that I miss out on being there for my children – helping them know that they’re ‘worthy of love and belonging’ (thanks Brene Brown!) is priority to me.
C. Check in with your mentor as you consider your stretch assignment. Post your stretch assignment on the board and describe how it will enhance your leadership.
My stretch assignment is to see if we can sell some of the training content we develop. I recently developed some compliance training that received excellent feedback from the NY Commission, perhaps there’s opportunity there. I know the idea has been tossed around but I’d like to get clarity on how this is possible. I think this stretch goal will help me with the boundaries eg; influencing a range of stakeholders and having the right collaborators on-board. Being clear on what I want to achieve and what my needs are (providing structure/clarity).
