What struck you most about the readings and video?
James talks about creating ‘habits’. I agree with this – it’s important to look at how we currently behave and is anything limiting our growth. Do we habitually put ourselves in situations that are uncomfortable? Years ago I read the book ‘Who Moved My Cheese’, which was excellent. It talks about the down-side of staying in your comfort zones.
One of the articles also talks about ‘comfort zones’. One of the best sayings I’ve heard (and now one of my mantras) is: be comfortable in uncomfortable. And be ok that there will be challenges along the way, that’s where the growth happens.
Were there things with which you disagreed?
Not really… The article ‘How Leaders Overcome Their Comfort Zone’ was very good.
What do you want to get out of your STRETCH ASSIGNMENT?
I'd like to keep stretching myself in learning about IT systems, such as Oracle. Although I think I'm ok at it, it's something I'd like to get better at. I've spent the last 25 years in organizational psychology, so it'll be nice to learn and strengthen a different skill set.
Reflecting back on your 360 results, your current leadership skills and areas where you need to learn and grow, what kind of stretch assignment will serve you best?
The main take-away was to make more recommendations in certain situations. I know this about myself. I hold back until I’m comfortable and understand my audience and my role. I’m ok in smaller groups but can be a little reserved, at least initially, in larger groups, in which I’m unfamiliar.
