What struck you most about the readings and video? Prior to reading this material and watching the videos I had a somewhat negative outlook on this Stretch Assignment. I know what I do well and I’m comfortable with it. I have achieved success. Why change? I realize after this assignment that my negative outlook, while understandable is wrong. In my life I have faced many physical and health challenges in my life. I understand, in that arena that if I do not challenge myself, I will lose function. In this arena the consequences are not grave, but the benefits are immense. Stretching in leadership, while uncomfortable in the process, really has no downside. The potential benefits are immense. The cost transitory and the effort worthwhile.
Were there things with which you disagreed? The things I disagreed with were the constant analogy to physically stretching the body. If the same percentage of leaders do this time of stretch project as general population long term commitment to exercise than this is approach will not be successful in great part. I think a better analogy is the analogy made between stretch and lifelong learning. What percentage of leaders read, take classes, or watch documentaries? My guess is it is far higher than those who exercise regularly. This is a relatively small point I know but for those of us with physical challenges it does create some discord.
What do you want to get out of your STRETCH ASSIGNMENT? I want to figure out to become more of a team player. I am used to leading from the front. Perhaps it is a remnant from my years as an entrepreneur. I tend to thing my approach is right. Working with a team to create a new advisory board for CWS will necessitate me working on my active listening skills and require far less talking. I will need to observe and listen. Two things I could use work on. Also, I am used to working as the leader. This will be a team of equals or superiors. Very different for me. Should be a great learning experience.
Reflecting back on your 360 results, your current leadership skills and areas where you need to learn and grow, what kind of stretch assignment will serve you best? I think a stretch assignment were I am forced to work with equals and superiors to build a consensus on a approach is challenging. I found the 360˚ project very informative. One of my new peers gave me the most critical, and I think most helpful feedback. Particularly where he accessed as areas of improvement places like communication which I felt where a strength. I need an assignment where I work on these communication skills in a peer environment.
