Module 4: Willingness to Stretch
Stretch definition: to be capable of expanding
One of the most important actions that a leader can take is to demonstrate their own willingness to learn new things, admit what they do not know and actively seek to learn. This creates an environment that embraces vulnerability.
Stretch Assignments definition: experiences that challenge and potentially broaden a person’s current capabilities; e.g., assignments that require someone to manage and negotiate change, exert influence over others, and build coalitions.
Stretch assignments play a significant role in the development of a new reign of leaders. The most challenging project pushes your limits and tests your skills. Seeking and committing to a "stretch assignment" is a risk—one that is well worth taking in terms of the personal opportunity to grow, and absolutely necessary if you are committed to breaking away from the others and differentiating yourself. It requires an individual to take a leap beyond their comfort zone and, in the process, pick up new skills. Stretch assignments are about getting individuals with leadership or learning potential to expand their competencies and skills to newer and wider levels.
Stretch assignments allow employees with leadership potential to ease into leadership roles by exposing them to an array of roles and responsibilities.
Learning Objectives: At the end of Willingness to Stretch, participants will be able to:
• Define your leadership strengths
• “Flex” your stretch “muscles” to learn more about an unknown area
• Receive and benefit from authentic feedback from colleagues
• Apply Stretch PDSA to enhance your leadership skills
