How do you engage a team in innovating when they have anxiety around change?
I believe there are three steps to engaging a team innovating when they have anxiety around change?
1- Acknowledge the Anxiety
2- Acknowledge and speak to the cause of Anxiety (Pressure, Time, Fear, etc.)
3- Restate the Mission and Encourage Alignment/Agreement
People are usually anxious about things they aren’t sure they have control over the outcomes for. People often get anxious about control. I know because I have experienced this myself. However, I have found that when managers, supervisors and leaders acknowledge me, my anxiety and what could potentially cause my anxiety it helps me let off an exhale or sigh of relief. There’s a sense of “okay, this is normal. It’s not out of the ordinary and I shouldn’t be freaked out about this.”
Immediately, almost in the same breath, the most successful leaders speak to our goal or our mission. It instantly realigns everyone’s mind toward a common goal rather than personal insecurities or concern. We become a whole rather than an insignificant part. Communicating possibility in the power of unity as a team, community, group usually inspires and opens the door for others to walk through innovation and allay fears or hinderances to its manifestation.
What is the relationship between innovation and steady state? Should innovation be embedded in steady state?
I believe a steady state is a foundation. It’s the launching pad for innovation. Innovation is not creation but rather a leap from creation. Innovation should not be embedded in a steady state but should be conceived in a steady state. The parameters of support, initiative, collaboration, resources, vision all play a part, and those factors must be preasent. They are there not to constrict but to guide as a mission statement does.

What are some other circumstances where failure may not be an option and innovation is imperative?
Providing Trauma informed Care to those who may not be receptive.
Ensuring that the well-being of those we serve is accounted for when circumstances don’t seem to work in their favor (e.g., pandemic)
Life or Death situation where the need for a product or service can be the difference between life and death. In cases like this, innovators must find ways to make the product or service customer-friendly, relatable, compliant, and affordable.
What specific elements within this chapter will best support your efforts to innovate?
I believe the idea or notion of creating a culture of innovation by creating a platform; dialogue; a safe space; direction/guidance.
Being able to recognize all the Risks/Constraints and seek to mitigate or decrease their impact.
Technology, Functionality, and the more I delve deep into the article, the more i recognize that the best support is vision, persistence, possibility and a team willing to push toward innovation but willing to FAIL.
Failure, or setbacks are all a part of the process. I believe that innovation goes beyond the end result. It involves the process as well.
