Do you consider yourself innovative? Why? Why not?
Yes and No.
I believe I have the INNOVATION Gene in me. I believe that there are moments that I have these epiphanies, realizations, amazing breakthrough ideas, but then... I don't act on them.
One of the things I learned from my evaluation was that I am someone who sees the big picture and oftentimes knows what's next, but I don't challenge my self to go there because of discomfort or the unwillingness to have those awkward conversations where my passion can be interpretted as arrogance or my vision can be translated as disregard for the status quo and "what's working". What's interesting however is that when I'm in a position of authority where it fits my description to have those conversations, I do. For example, as a strategic brand marketing consultant I had a client who had a thriving plus-size modeling agency and was in the initial stages of development. When asked, "what can I do now?" after having done catalogues, catwalks and designer viewings, I recommended tours, videos, blogs, vlogs (before it was popular), and specific marketing to a demographic that she knew but also expanding it to a market she hadn't considered (High Fashion and pushing the envelope to having a platform for plus size models on Fashion Week). Let's just say that I didn't need to say or do more. I had no more consultations, just conversations. The rest: She was one of the first to hold high-fashion virtual catwalks, contests and model recruitment online during the pandemic. She's been featured in Forbes and numerous magazines. That was just one of my clients.
Innovation to me is more than just bringing new ideas to the table, its being bold enough to share them and pursue them. Being open enough to let others hear them and run with them bringing back a version you hadn't thought possible but your willingness to see the impossible enabled them to make the impossible possible.
Do I consider myself innovative? I do to the extent that I hear an idea and have the platform and/or freedom to run with it. Some places or cultures don't allow for that. Because of a history working in cultures that stifled innovation because it threatened control, I have been "trained" to subdue, suppress and conceal innovation.
Now, I am willing to spread my wings because of working in a place like FEDCAP in a team like Career Advance - Older Adult Program because our Program Manager and Senior Director constantly open the floor to suggestions, ideas, conversations to discuss problems and work to viable solutions. This creates an environment for innovation. In this space, I AM INNOVATIVE.
Am I innovative, almost. I'm working on being pro-active in sharing my ideas and suggestions without feeling the need to be "welcome" first.
What is one thing that stood out for you about innovation from the article(s) and video(s) that you had not considered before?
There were several things that stood out to me:
When GUY KAWASAKI spoke about having a MANTRA. How awesome is that? To note a distinction between a slogan and a mantra. A slogan being a catchphrase but a mantra being the validation for your Meaning and Mission, It's what gives a clear understanding of the purpose of your product and/or service.
When WARREN BERGER shared that a 4 year old asks about 300 questions per day, it reminded me of the many times my parents went on about how I kept on asking question after question especially during car rides in Bedstuy, Flatbush or Parkslope in Brooklyn.
When SUSAN Wojcicki spoke about BEING A PLATFORM where innovative ideas can be shared and developed without being attached to being the sole proprietory voice receiving acclamation for making a difference.
But
WHAT STOOD OUT MOST FOR ME:

When DAVID BRIER said that INNOVATION is
"having the certainty to know that the dots you see are not only valid but necessary if the world is to move forward."
That HIT ME like
WHOA! If I DON'T see VALUE in MY IDEAS or INNOVATION, the WORLD can SUFFER
To me, that speaks to my soul because my divine purpose requires that I make a tranformational difference in the lives of people who will change the world.
That's who I am.
I touch you.
You touch the world.
To NOT touch you means that I let you die and
I CAN'T do that. YOU MUST LIVE
and if I MUST LIVE In order for you to...guess what
you might as well leave that space empty for me, cause I'm coming to fill it to inspire and motivate you to be, have and do what the world has called you to do.
