Do you consider yourself innovative? Why? Why not?
Innovation is a skill I sometimes have. Why sometimes you may ask? Because I often do not create the original idea, but I am very good at taking someone initial concept that has merit but is incomplete and perfecting it. I may not imagine the original lightbulb, but I can create ways to ensure it burns bright. This skill to me is not classic innovation. I often struggle to see the initial solution, but I will often seize on another’s idea and see how that can be used to solve the issue. Is that innovation? I am still unsure.
- What is one thing that stood out for you about Innovation from the article(s) and video that you had not considered before?
I found the article about differences between the sexes in seeking and accepting stretch tasks fascinating. Perhaps it is because I was raised by strong successful women. I do not understand the reluctance that appears to be culturally created in many women to be reluctant to seize these opportunities. I would not have expected the differences the survey appears to demonstrate except the difference in motivation. I was not surprised that men were more interested in financial impact and women more interested in the impact of the stretch task on family and work personal life balance. That I would have expected. I find it troubling that so many women underestimate their abilities. It is essential that for a company to succeed it must work to minimize these differences and maximize the talents of the women who work. Many companies could from Fedcap’s success in this area.
