C. - The communication secret that I resonated with the most was speak not with a forked tongue. I make it a point to be as honest as I possibly could in life and I think the ability to embrace the truth does help those around trust you more. A leader that I think really utilized was President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His use of the fire side chats to talk to the American helped him to gain popularity throughout his presidency. He used these chats to be straight with the American people and keep them informed about what the government is doing, why they are doing it, and what is going to be done next. He took the presidency right after the great depression which lead into WWII. His ability to communicate the truth effectively to the people allowed him to counteract opposing media claims, gain the trust of the people, and gain the ability to influence the thoughts and mood of the country as a whole.
On the other hand, a president like George W. Bush Jr was not a great communicator and was not effective at portraying a trust worthy persona. He stumbled on his words a lot, attempted humor a little too much, and gave off the demeanor that he didn't take things seriously. Even though he was voted in twice, I feel that he was never able to break out of that. He also dealt with a big crisis during his presidency and compared to FDR's run, it is a stark contrast. It is interesting to think about how his presidency would of went if he was instead a strong communicator.
E -Emotional Intelligence is the ability to acknowledge, understand, and utilize emotions internally and externally. This helps one to empathize with those around them and understand where they are coming from in any particular situation. Having solid EI and being able to empathize will help to make your communication more personable and effective. It makes a big difference when someone feels like you understand what they are feeling and where they are coming from.
F - Another leader in history who captures my attention is Winston Churchill. His strength and conviction behind his words along with his ability to get his point across was a potent combination for a great communicator. His speeches held the flame of hope for people in the UK during a very dark time for them. He holds a lot of the traits that were listed in the communication secrets. He was accountable, he had great communication skills, he spoke the truth when he addressed his people, he kept it personal, had an open mind, and the list goes on. He is another great example of what an effective leader can due in the right scenario.
