Emotional intelligence according to one of its original proponents Daniel Goleman is made up of 5 key components 1.Self awareness 2.Self-regulation 3.Motivation 4. Empathy 5.Social Skills
It is, at its simplest the ability to use your "understand, use and control" your own emotions. This is important because the ability to control and intergrade your emotions makes you a better communicator. Not simply by improving your verbal and non-verbal communication skills but by improving your listening skills both for verbal and non-verbal ques from your intended audience. Use of EI makes business communication more effective by allowing the communicator and their intended audience to understand each other not simply on an intellectual level but on an emotional level. It allows you to effectively reach your audience and to avoid the often found problem of being "tone deaf" in your communication in the workplace.
